The Making of Thali-Shekhawati: A Fracture Zone
₹5,500.00 – ₹8,000.00
This residential workshop invites participants to explore the rich political, religious, and folk culture of Shekhawati, focusing on its literary and historical traditions. Led by Professor Tyler Williams (Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations, University of Chicago), the workshop delves into Raso literature, merchant travelogues, and oral traditions of the region, offering an in-depth look at the textual and material culture of Shekhawati.
Participants will work closely with manuscripts such as bahī-khātā (merchant accounts), rāj-bahī (royal records), and gutakā (notebooks), practicing skills in reading and interpreting these valuable historical documents. Additionally, students will engage with key political and courtly texts, including excerpts from the Kesari Siṁha Guṇ Rāso (VS 1754 / 1697 CE) and folk praise poems from Śekhāvāṭī Ke Vīr Gīt.
The workshop will also explore religious narratives, hymns, and folk songs from Dadu Panthi, Niranjani, and Chishti traditions, giving participants a comprehensive understanding of the region’s religious and social landscape. This experience will foster a deeper appreciation of Shekhawati’s vibrant and diverse historical context.
